- Ok. so some people think of these as old fashioned. But there is almost nothing better for a pop of color in a semi-shady to shady area. They are fantastic in a container by themselves or in a mixed container with other shade loving plants. They are easy, easy, easy and bloom almost non-stop until frost.

CHRYSOCEPHALUM
- When I first saw this at my friend Sarah Boudreau's shop, The Flower Shop at Winslow Farm, I frankly was not that impressed. And as much as Sarah tried to convince me what a wonderful addition it was to a container planting. She was not successful.
Then I saw it in some container plantings, that Kristen Anderson had put together and I had to change my mind. This little guy looked great...and...this was in October!
Those delicate fuzzy silver leaves and little yellow ball-like flowers really does make it a delightful and unique addition in a combination planter.

GERANIUM
- Ah, the Geranium...They are a 'Work Horse' in containers and in the ground. They can take a lot of abuse. They do need to be deadheaded but will provide abundant color all season into the cool weather of fall. The Calliope variety is semi-draping and not only looks lovely in containers it is quite nice in hanging baskets.

LOBELIA
- Simply addictive because of their vibrant blues. They look stunning in containers. Unfortunately they have a tendency to be a cooler weather plant. However, the 'Techno' series handles the heat better then most and has bloomed reliably for me well into the summer.
But I still advise keeping them out of very hot areas and never let them dry out!
- Simply addictive because of their vibrant blues. They look stunning in containers. Unfortunately they have a tendency to be a cooler weather plant. However, the 'Techno' series handles the heat better then most and has bloomed reliably for me well into the summer.
But I still advise keeping them out of very hot areas and never let them dry out!

- Nemesias love cooler temperatures though I find these new hybrids to bloom well into the summer. They are early blooming and are a nice addition to pansies early in the season. And they have a lovely sweet scent!

Even though heucheras are a perennial they are fabulous in planters!

They take shade to sun. And the foliage is just beautiful. The delicate stalks of of little bell shaped flowers are very pretty while they last and do not interfere with the rest of the planting. Shown in this photo are Heuchera 'Black Seas' and Heuchera 'Caramel'.

18"-2' tall by 12" wide. I prune it back a bit to keep a more rounded look. Great tall filler with light green and cream variegated leaves. Purple-blue periwinkle like flowers. Full sun to part shade.

and start to compensate for other plants that may grow 'tired' as the season progresses.

Sweet Potato Vines take on a life of their own and are especially nice when only utilizing a small number of plants in a combination.
I use Plectranthus 'Lemon Twist' as a 'yellow'. This is very effective when yellow is needed throughout the season in large container plantings.
Lamium - Great for use in medium to large planters. Will take sun or shade. The silvery-white in the foliage brings out the color in almost any color spectrum.

A work horse of a filler. Vinca is always a great option for a draping filler. It goes and goes and goes and can handle being a bit ignored. Often paired with Geraniums, another work horse of a plant.

ANNUAL GRASSES
- Adding any of these grasses to a container provides height, structure and interest. Other than making sure they do not dry out grasses require very little care. A container that utilizes a grass and a couple of fillers will continue to look attractive all season.
Annual grasses also look great planted directly in the ground. Cypress grass 'Nile Princess' even likes it a bit damp and does quite well near ponds or other water features.

18"-30" tall, space 24"-36". A great fun grass to use as a tall element in a combintion planting. It is also nice to use in the landscape. Especially in wet to damp areas such as near water features.

Juncus 'Blue Mohawk'
24"-36" tall with a spacing of 8"-12". Beautiful tall narrow habit with blue-green foliage the resembles 'chives' (but don't eat. you will be very disappointed). Full sun. Containers and landscapes.

Ophiopogon 'Nigrescens' (Black Mondo Grass)
10"-12" tall, space 12"- 14". Dark purple-black foliage with beautiful with a low mounding habit. Grass foliage is slightly draping.
Full sun to part shade. It will have a darker color in full sun.
This grass is border-line hardy here in our area of Maine (Z5-9). And I am dying to try it in one of my gardens. But for now I am listing it under annuals. It will be a lovely filler\accent in containers!

Stays smaller when used in container plantings but needs a larger container such as a whiskey barrel. Full sun to part shade. However, the foliage with be darker black if in full sun. Large containers and landscape. Stunning!
